With the nearby Plains of Camdeboo yielding its rich fossil history, a 16 000-hectare Karoo Nature Reserve almost surrounding the town, the Valley of Desolation, more than 220 National Monuments (the most of any SA town) and a very lively township culture, Graaff-Reinet is the most precious jewel in the Karoo crown.

The area around Graaff-Reinet is perfect for 4X4 trails, cycling, paragliding and quad-biking. Farmstays, visits to Bushman rock art sites, astronomy sessions under clear Karoo skies and a drink of the locally-distilled, fiery Agave spirit – you’ll forget where you were going in the first place…
