|Midrand, until fairly recently called Halfway House, was a sleepy halfway point between Johannesburg and Pretoria. In the 1880s the area was developed as a resting stop for horsemen and animal-drawn traffic travelling between these two cities. Today the town has a modern metropolitan personality and the traffic that passes through Midrand has slightly more horsepower… Strategically placed, Midrand is among South Africa’s most rapidly developing areas with one of the highest employment rates in the country which contributes to its growing population of over 200 000. Midrand has also developed a buzzy nightlife. Youth from Pretoria and Jozi (an affectionate term for Johannesburg) descend on the clubs for a ‘jol’ - local lingo for a good time. Despite the town’s commercial face-lift, beyond the highways the area retains elements of its traditional lifestyle where old-fashioned horsepower is still a pastime. Places of interest in the vicinity include Lesedi Cultural Village which provides insight into the colourful life and culture of the Ndebele people; The Sterkfontein Caves, part of the ‘Cradle of Humankind’, a World Heritage Site where a 2,5 million years’ old skull dubbed Mrs Ples was found; and the Lory Park Zoo which boasts an educational facility aimed at encouraging social responsibility towards animals and the environment among children.|
