It has a long, sandy beach, safe bathing, a pavilion, esplanade, children's amusement park and a cluster of swimming pools. Major Attractions: Historical: Muizenberg SA Police Museum, Main Rd. Tel 788 7031. Includes the region's first police post and a display of the Battle of Muizenberg. The old Magistrate's Court and Carnegie Library recreate cells, single quarters, court, charge office, etc. Het Posthuys: Main Rd. Built in the late 18th century and one of a series of customs houses built for the Dutch East India Company. Considered the oldest structure in False Bay and houses an exhibition of the Battle of Muizenberg (1795). The Post Office: Main Rd. Completed in 1911, it was the first post office in South Africa to receive mail by air. Original tiles depict the battle of Muizenberg. The Railway Station: Main Rd. Built in 1912/13 in red brick with sandstone rustication. A fine example of the Edwardian era, it was opened on 7 June 1913. Natale Labia Museum: 192 Main Rd. Tel 788 4106. The princely former residence is now a satellite of the National Gallery and houses superb permanent and temporary collections. Rhodes Cottage: Main Rd. Tel 788 1816. Cecil John Rhodes's seaside cottage. It contains personal memorabilia, period furniture and a diorama of his burial place at Matopos. Joan St Leger Lindbergh Arts Foundation: A unique cultural foundation holding art exhibitions and musical performances. It houses an Africana reference library and an Internet computer room. Tel 788 2795. Masque Theatre: An intimate theatre staging at least twelve productions annually. Tel 788 6999. Muizenberg Toy Museum and Collector's Shop: 8 Beach Rd. Tel 788 1569. A fascinating collection of early toys dating from the turn of the century to the nineteen sixties. The Great Outdoors: Beaches: Shaped by rows of coloured bathing boxes, Muizenberg is the start of a long, powdery beach running 40km to Gordon's Bay. Popular with families and young surfers, the pavilion offers a fleamarket, great fun and entertainment. a lifeguard and municipal beach constables. Muizenberg-St James Walkway: An invigorating, scenic walk along the ocean's edge. Rondevlei Bird Reserve. Off Prince George's Dr. Offers birdwatchers a variety of Cape birds, observation towers with telescopes, the Leonard Gill Fields. Museum and waterside hides for watching the hippopotami. Silvermine Mountain Reserve: Accessible from Muizenberg by car or by foot along the various mountain trails, Silvermine is home to many species of flora and fauna and abundant and varied birdlife. Zandvlei: A large water area originating from streams in the Constantia and Tokai mountains, Zandvlei offers excellent boardsailing and a yacht and canoe club. No powerboats are allowed.
