Shopaholics take note. Johannesburg’s Rosebank is a must! Centrally placed between city centre and the other shoppers’ paradises, Sandton and Hyde Park, Rosebank has something for everyone. A residential suburb as well as a large industrial area, its development began in 1950 on what was in 1896 a farm called Rosemill Orchards. Several shopping areas are in walking distance of each other. The Firs and the Mall of Rosebank consist of restaurants, pubs, and all manner of retail shops. The latter also has a cinema complex that offers “art house” movies for lovers of non-commercial cinema. The newest development, the Zone, is the in-place for the younger generation to rub shoulders with TV, music and theatre stars. It’s from here, too, that the city’s hippest youth station YFM broadcasts, and one of TV’s favourite presenters sells her coveted Stoned Cherrie designs. Thanks to a temperate daytime climate throughout the year, outdoor restaurants in Johannesburg are extremely popular and in close proximity to the permanent African Craft Market where one can find the best of African stone and wooden carvings, masks, crafts, fabrics and beads. On Sundays and public holidays, the rooftop parking lot of the Mall is transformed into one of the busiest flea markets in the country, featuring over 650 stalls with items ranging from collectables, antiques, ceramics, crafts and clothing to home-made cheese and bread! Furthermore, many of the country’s leading and independent art galleries can be found in and around Rosebank. A concentration of some of the best are on Jan Smuts Avenue, where would-be buyers can source works by William Kentridge, Sam Nhlengethwa and Willie Bester or the very best of Wildlife Art and award-winning South African crafts.
