Reservations can be made through the resort's Satour-accredited tourist office, situated in Palinggat, the oldest homestead in the area. The office is well-equipped to provide comprehensive information on all the following opportunities as well as guided tours. ATTRACTIONS Watersport, fishing and angling. Whale watching. (mid June to Oct.) Historical and architectural heritage, including Strandveld architecture, to be seen at the fishermen's village at Melkhoutfontein, as well as the two National Monuments, Palinggat and Jagersbosch, which adorn the centre of the town. Tame hand-fed eels - viewed at the Tourist Office at 11:00 am daily except Sundays. River ferry trips (reservations at Tourist Office) Fish traps constructed by Strandlopers visible at low tides. Botanical Gardens and the Pauline Bothnen Reserve providing a unique area of great floral wealth. Flower routes. Nature reserves: Rein's, Geelkrans and private reserves. HIKING TRAILS: The small picturesque commercial fishing harbour provides facilities for the keen fisherman, with rich rocky formations along the coastline for active rock anglers and divers. About 1km beyond Kandahar, Milkwood/Muffet farms are situated on your right. Overnight accommodation is available. Contact No. (028) 7541649. 6.4km from Kandahar you will reach Tamani Farmhouse on your left. This is a private nature reserve with river frontage, picnic spots and hiking trails. 5km from Tamani a road will join in from the right. Proceed straight on from this junction towards the west for 6.4km . Note the change of vegetative type to a typical fynbos biome alongside the road. Turn right. After 6km you will arrive at a turnoff marked Heidelberg, but only from the opposite direction. Turn left, 1.4 km onwards a sign "Swartheuwel Guest Farm" will appear on your left. This is a sheep farm. Visit a traditional thatched home, A tractor/trailer ride through indigenous fynbos and attendance of a concert performed by the pupils of a Returning to the main road turn right. Follow this road for 17km to track the Heidelberg Road turn left. Drive south for 3.6 km. This road will lead you to the quaint village of Vermaaklikheid, a farming community of yesteryear .Before you reach the centre of the village, road signs of "River Magic" will be visible. This is a holiday establishment that provides accommodation, meals and boat trips on the Duivenhoks river. Take the southerly route for 2,6 km. Drive 2,6 km to enjoy the view of the Duivenhoks river. (Cut de Sac). You will reach a closed gate to the private Holiday Resort of Puntjie .Return to Marker 26: This is the "Blombos" road. Drive east for 6km to find an entrance on your left marked Satsenhergspos". This farm belongs to Hirsh and Sue fish. Walk freely among the Fynbos. Accommodation is available in a fully equipped farmhouse. Contact no 082 658 4561. Continue on the Blombos road for 13km to an adjoining road to the left. Drive for another 12,5 km to reach the tar road connecting Stilbaai and Jongensfontein .You have now rejoined route 1. Accommodation: Ellensrust/Preekstoel caravan parks & chalets (028) 754 1034; Fynbos Farm Route On your return to the tar road at "Kardoesie", a little roadside store, interesting products and refreshments are available. Drive 3,6km , turn left at the sign "Melkhoutkraal". Follow the main gravel road for 4,8km. Look out for a name board on your left indicating "Steve and Brenda Neate". Turn left and follow the road to the Neate's house. The Neate's are honey farmers. Brenda also breeds parrots. Different flavours of Return to the tar road, follow the road for 6 km . The cemetery is on your left. Turn right and follow the road to me commercial fishing harbour and enjoyable "off-jetty angling". Meals are available. A whale watching site is situated just above the harbour. Another whale view site is on the eastern side of the river mouth at the Lappiesbaai Restaurant at the main beach. |
