Major Attractions

Many dwellings originate from 1860, although the village boasts only two national monuments, namely The Post House and Plooms Pottery. Greyton was established as a genuine agricultural village, the first of its kind in the country.

History and Culture

Greyton was founded as an agricultural village. All landowners were self sufficient in growing their own produce and by keeping livestock for domestic use. The leiwater system was channeled to each property to provide fresh running water to each household. This system still operates successfully today. An aesthetics committee ensures that all new buildings meet with their requirements. Herbert Vigne bought the farm Weltervreden and divided it into agricultural plots. He named the village Greyton after Sir George Grey. It is on a historic wagon route - the Old Cape Highway. Oak and poplar trees indicate overnight stops for wagons of yesteryear.
