Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, SA's first proclaimed international biosphere, is referred to as the heart of the Fynbos Kingdom with its 1600 fynbos species, whereof 150 are found nowhere else. Tel 028 - 2715138
Harold Porter National Botanical Garden in Betty's Bay is a showcase of the fynbos kingdom with walks through spectacular gardens and hiking trails up deep, wooded kloofs where waterfalls splash into fern-fringed pools. Hiking: There is a network of 18 hiking trails ranging from 1 to 6 hours in the Kleinmond Coastal and Mountain Nature Reserve. No permits required. Or explore the 6-day trails or overnight in the Kogelberg Nature Reserve. Permits required. Bookings 021 - 9454570.

Golfing: The 9 hole course in Kleinmond - Tel 028 - 2713525, surrounded by fynbos with views down to Sandown Bay, and the award winning championship 18 hole course on the Arabella Country Estate - Tel 028 - 2840000, next to the Bot River Lagoon, are both popular amongst local and international golfers.
History and Culture

The remains of the Old Whaling Station site at Stony Point, Betty's Bay can still be seen today. From 1913 to 1930 two whaling boats hunted whales, mostly the Southern Right whale, in the seas of Hangklip-Kleinmond and brought them ashore at Stony Point to be processed. The main products were the meat and oil from the blubber.

View the graves, on the Palmiet beach, of those who perished when a Norwegian vessel, the Gustav Adolf, And off the Palmiet beach in 1902. The crosses are made from parts of the wreck. Eco/Wildlife

Kogelberg Nature Reserve, the core zone of the Biosphere, limits entry to 12 persons per day on a trail to provide a quality escape for the nature lover. There are 6-day trails and one overnight option. Permits are required. Also 1 mountain bike trail of 39 km's and whitewater rafting and tubing are doen on the Palmiet River. Tel 028 - 2715138. Kleinmond Coastal and Mountain Nature Reserve has a network of 18 walking trails ranging from 1 to 6 hours. A popular walk is the coastal walk from the Beach House Hotel through the Harbour to the Palmiet River. No permits required. Harold Porter National Botanical Garden is one of eight National Botanical Gardens within the National Botanical Institute. The land was bought in 1938 by Mr. Harold Porter to preserve its beauty for future generations. Stony Point Nature Reserve houses one of only 2 mainland African Penguin Colonies in Southern Africa. The best time to visit is in the late afternoon when these plucky little creatures return from fishing expeditions each day. The Rooisand Nature Reserve, next to the Bot River Lagoon, is a birder's paradise as many migrants and residents can be seen during summer, including a large flock of Greater Flamingo with the Lesser one among them.
