Stanford Stanford Tourism Bureau Main Attractions Klein River Boat & kayak trips/hire Stanford was, from 1729, a farm called De Kleine Rivers Valey Farm grazed and later owned by a succession of farmers, but none so well known as Robert Stanford who was later knighted for his role in the convict agitation of 1849. The farm was bought from Stanford for £50 and laid out as a town in 1857. A few of the buildings in Stanford date back to those early days. You can even sleep at the original farmhouse where Lady Anne Barnard spent two nights in the tallest beds I have ever seen, according to her memoires. The present Anglican church in Stanford was built in the late 1700's and reverted to the Anglican church in 1872. It is still a popular venue for weddings.
