These buildings reflect the history of the district and house a fine collection of furniture and artefacts. The Drostdy itself dates back to 1747 and was built to serve as the residence and official quarters of the landdrost of Swellendam, the Dutch East India's senior official in the 'colony in the far distant regions'.
